WAM Picks: Mittens, kids' book launches and dancing zombies

Friday — A public poetry reading by Griffin Poetry Prize nominee Sue Goyette, who will be doing a reading of her latest book Ocean at Eastern Edge Gallery at 7:30 p.m.

Friday — Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s 24th Annual Fundraising Gala hosted by Mark Critch, featuring NSO conductor Marc David and special guests, including gospel superstar Matt Maher, rockers RocketRocketShip, singer-songwriter Ian Foster and tenor David Pomeroy. Tickets are $100 per person. The event will take place at the Arts & Culture Centre at 8 p.m.

All weekend — Knitt'n Mittens: Knitters from all over have knit and designed mittens for this event at the Quidi Vidi Plantation. Bring your knitting and sit awhile. Double ball knitting tips will be shared. On Saturday at 11 a.m. until noon and Sunday from 2-3 p.m. there’s a show and tell. Bring in a favourite pair of mittens and tell us about them.

All weekend — Christmas at The Glacier is here yet again. You may not be ready for winter, but the first Christmas shopping event is on all weekend at the Glacier. Doors open at 10 a.m. each day.

Theatre — It Is Solved By Walking is a play inspired by poet Wallace Stevens’ poem Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. The play tells the story of a woman determined to escape the prison of a failed marriage and reclaim her creativity. Starring Ruth Lawrence and Hugh Thompson, directed by Mary Vingoe. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the LSPU Hall.

Saturday — Anita Singh’s new artwork at The Leyton Gallery. Her opening is from 3-5 p.m.

Theatre — The Tragic History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe at the Barbara Barrett Theatre (formerly Basement Theatre) of the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre. Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Super TSC Night — Memorial University in St. John's is inviting alumni, students and friends to the Breezeway for Super TSC Night. The Concert features Shanneyganock, Barry Canning, Mick Davis and DJ Slim Macho.

Saturday — A book launch with Spooktacular refreshments at the ghost-infested Newman Wine Vaults, with award-winning author Charis Cotter. Her new book is The Swallow: A Ghost Story. Suitable for children ages eight and up, and brave adults! Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday — A book launch of Janet McNaughton’s latest work Dear Canada: Flame and Ashes: The Great Fire Diary of Triffie Winsor, St. John’s, Newfoundland, 1892 at the Water Street Heritage Shop from 2-4 p.m.

Saturday — The Johnson GEO Centre is getting ready for Halloween with A Dance of The Dead event on Saturday night. Ages 19 years and older, with door prizes and a costume contest. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. with the event going until 2 a.m.

Sunday — The Johnson GEO Centre has spooktacular kid’s activities including 3D movies, crafts, loot bags and science experiments. Takes place on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m

Sunday — Radio Weather - Véhicule Press invites you to The Ship for the launch of ShoshannaWingate’s new poetry collection at 7 p.m.
