WAM Picks: The Shining, Halloween salsa and a Christmas craft fair

Friday — Shriek to The Shining. Stanley Kubrick’s horrifying classic horror film will be screened at the LSPU Hall on Halloween night at 7:30 p.m.

Friday — Classical musicians Laurel Swindon and guest pianist Krista Vincent perform lyrical favourites for flute and piano, including gems by newly rediscovered female composers Anna Bon and Mel Bonis from the 18th and 19th centuries. At the D.F. Cook Recital Hall at 8 p.m.

Friday & Saturday — CBTG’s Bloody Diamonds just finished their North American tour and are heading to Newfoundland for some Halloween insanity with local bands Twerp, Braineaters and What’s Your Damage Heather? Catch them at 10 p.m.

Saturday — Eastern Edge Art Gallery is celebrating three decades with 30/30 VISION: 30 projects in 30 days for 30 years. On Saturday, there's an opening of new artwork from Gerard McNiven and a champagne toast. Folks are invited to head down and raise a glass of bubbly to the 30th anniversary with music by Steve Maloney, starting at 7 p.m.

Saturday — Get geared up in your Halloween costume for salsa dancing at the LSPU Hall. Starts at 8p.m.

Saturday and Sunday night — Want to hear David Francey sing St. John’s Train in person? Come to the Ship on Saturday and Sunday night to experience the three-time Juno winner live, with opening act Colleen Power. Show starts at 9 p.m.

Sunday — Pedlar Press’s one-day mini-festival at the Cox & Palmer Second Space in the LSPU Hall. Five Pedlar authors, including Stan Dragland, poet Emily McGiffin, Sara Tilley, Kate Cayley and poet Souvankham Thammavongsa. They will read from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. New titles will be launched from 7 to 9 p.m.

Sunday — Music and Friends with Shanneyganock, Alan Doyle, The Navigators, the original Celtic Connection, the Irish Descendants, Bud Davidge of Simani, Masterless Men, The Celtic Fiddlers and others will celebrate the legacy of O’Brien’s Music Store. The show starts at 7 p.m. at the Delta Hotel. Tickets available here.

Sunday — The International Food and Craft Expo at the Holiday Inn. Come down to grab some goodies from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Sunday — Now that Halloween is out of the way, Christmas has officially started! Join carollers, bakers, and candlestick makers at the third annual old-fashioned Christmas market in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Atlantic. Takes place at The Rocket Room. Doors open at 11:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m. Admission $2, children 12 years and younger admitted free.
