WAM Picks: Storytelling, a march to remember and a golden anniversary

The St. John’s Storytelling Festival starts this weekend:

FRIDAY - Grand Opening Concert - An evening of songs and tales with Jan Andrews (Ontario), Jack Lynch (Ireland), Bev Kane (Renews), Ellen Power (St. John’s), and Andy Jones (St. John’s). It all gets underway at the Signal Hill Interpretation Centre at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY - Tales in the Tent - Free Storytelling at the St. John's Farmers' Market in the Lions Club Chalet – Bonaventure Avenue, St. John’s 11 a.m. to noon.

Storytelling Workshop - Putting Your Personal Stamp on Traditional Tales with Bob Barton, upstairs at the Rocket Bakery on Water Street. 1-4 p.m.​ Pre-register: storytellingstjohns@gmail.com

A Storywalk - Four storytellers and a lovely walk in Memorial University's Botanical Garden. 2 p.m.

Six-Minute Saturday - A cabaret of stories, music and song at Rocket Bakery. Starts at 8 p.m.

SUNDAY - Family Fun Day with Bob Barton at The Rooms, 1:30 p.m.

Concert in Tors Cove - at Five Island Art Gallery with Margaret Bennett (Scotland) and Jack Lynch (Ireland), starting at 2 p.m.

A Downtown Storywalk - Stroll in the early evening with Gary Green, who will spin tales related to the historic places you come across. Meet at the War Memorial on Water Street at 6:30 p.m.

What else is happening on Saturday?

​CBC Newfoundland and Labrador Celebrates 50 Years of Television - Come on in to our studios for a tour, and go behind the scenes. Visit the radio and television studios, where shows like Here & Now, the St. John’s Morning Show and WAM are produced. Pauline Thornhill and Jane Adey of CBC’s Land & Sea will be on hand to help mark the 50th anniversary of the show. Bring the kids to meet CBC characters Huckle Cat, Bookaboo and Bo on the Go. A barbecue will also be hosted by the Community Food Sharing Association. Our studios are located at 95 University Ave. Hope to see you between noon and 4 p.m.

Sisters in Spirit Event – A nation-wide event to raise awareness about the 1,200 missing and murdered Canadian Indigenous women. Prayer, smudging, throat singing and drumming and speeches. Discussion on the film Finding Dawn; as well as Faceless Dolls making, The event takes place at the MUN Science Building, in lecture hall 2109 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

MUN’s Super Science Fair - The fair will feature a touch tank from the Department of Ocean Sciences, a math scavenger hunt, hands-on chemistry; and the MUN Physics Department will show you what a spinning bicycle has in common with an MRI machine. The Faculty of Medicine will let you test your surgical skills, and the Marine Institute unlocks the secrets of the deep in our very own St. John’s harbour. At GAP Court in the Avalon Mall, from 2-4 p.m.

A March to Remember The First 500 - Members of the First and Second Battalions of the Newfoundland Regiment, the Church Lads Brigade, the Boy Scouts, the Signal Hill Tattoo, the Royal Newfoundland Honour Guard and relatives of the First 500, will walk from Pleasantville to Harbour Drive - following the same route taken by the first soldiers to leave Newfoundland to fight in WW1. The march begins at 1 p.m.

French Folk Music - Bon Débarras’ multi-instrumentalists play guitar, banjo, mandolin, accordion, jaw’s harp, ukulele, double bass, tres, kora, harmonica, cajón and washboard-making music flavoured with Cajun, rock, blues, rap and country. It starts at 8 p.m. in the Barbara Barrett Theatre of the Arts and Culture Centre.
