Wanted: Feed of Jiggs for Alberta-living Newfoundlanders

If you're a Newfoundlander and Labradorian living away, how far would you go for a traditional meal of Jiggs dinner?

A couple of roommates in Alberta have such a hankering for salt meat and pease pudding they've made a plea online for someone to tackle the full meal for them.

Joel Whalen and his roommates posted an ad on Kijiji — serious inquiries only — for someone to cook Sunday dinner, the way nan would.

"I need a Newfie to cook Sunday dinner, 1-4 per month for 2-4 fellas," the ad read.

"It doesn't have to be a lady, but preferably like nan. Not too picky on what you cook but; turkey, salt beef, dressing, gravy, turnip, potatoes, carrots, parsnip a scattered time, cabbage I [suppose], [enough] leftover for [the] week."

Whalen told CBC's St. John's Morning Show they're not picky about how they get the meal, and have already heard from possible Jiggs dinner candidates.

Fish cakes also accepted

"We kind of want you to sit down and eat with us though, just so we know you're not trying to poison us or anything," Whalen said.

Whalen said someone from Nova Scotia replied and said they've been trained in making a good Sunday dinner.

They would make the meal themselves, Whalen said, but their kitchen isn't fully outfitted.

It's not just turkey and boiled vegetables the men are looking for, Whalen said, adding toutons, fish and brewis, and fish cakes will be graciously accepted.

While the ad asks for a "lady" to cook the meal, the men said they don't care who does it as long as it's an authentic, Newfoundland dish.

Whalen said the roommates will pay for the food, but they have received an offer of a free dinner.
