Water outages close schools in central St. John's

Residents in some St. John's neighbourhoods are without water today, as city crews work to make repairs to separate water main breaks on Allandale Road and Empire Avenue.

The repairs at a break on Allandale Road, between Elizabeth Avenue and Prince Philip Drive, started around 8 a.m. Thursday, and the city says it expects work to be completed around 5 p.m.

A second water main break in the area of Empire Ave. and Freshwater Rd. was reported later in the morning.

The second break is also expected to be repaired by 5 p.m.

The City of St. John's issued a statement that area residents may not have water, or may be experiencing low water pressure, as repairs are done.

Schools in the centre city area decided to close early due to a loss of water pressure.

Bishop Abraham, Holy Cross, Bishop's College, Booth Memorial, Holy Heart, Brother Rice and Gonzaga are also closed.

Students at St. Bonaventure's College will be dismissed at 1 p.m.

The Rooms cultural complex in downtown St. John's said it would be closed until repairs were completed.

C.B.S. outage

The Town of Conception Bay South, meanwhile, reported that water outages are affecting some residents in Topsail, east of Woodpath Road, excluding Chaytors Road and Fowlers Road.

According to a statement from the town, water needed to be shut off to facilitate emergency repairs to the water main.

Crews are expected to complete work at 4:30 p.m.

Both St. John's and C.B.S. have advised residents there may be some water discoloration once water is restored to their homes.
