New Weight-Loss Equation: Researchers Determine Key Calorie Cutoff

VANCOUVER — Weight loss is not as simple as eating less and exercising more, and for those who struggle to shed the pounds, a new equation may offer some help.

Scientists are now using mathematics to better understand the physiology of weight loss, and more accurately predict just how much weight someone will lose on a specific diet and exercise regime, researchers said here today at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting.

In the past, physicians assumed that eating 500 fewer calories per day would lead to about a pound of weight loss per week, said Kevin Hall, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

But it turns out, this rule of thumb is wrong, Hall said, because it doesn't take into account that metabolism slows down during dieting. Thus, predictions that used this rule were overly optimistic, Hall said.

Hall and colleagues have developed a model that takes into account an individual's age, height, weight and physical activity level to better predict how much weight they might lose on a diet and exercise plan. Currently, the model is intended only for use by physicians and researchers scientists, Hall said.

Hall's research has also come up with a more realistic rule of thumb for weight loss. The new rule says you need to cut 10 calories per day from your diet for every pound you want to lose over a three-year period. So cutting 100 calories per day will lead to a 10-pound weight loss over three years, Hall said. Half of this weight loss would occur over the first year. To lose more weight after the three-year period, you'd have to cut more calories, Hall said.

The model may help policy makers understand the impact of public health measures on the obesity epidemic. For instance, one estimate of the effect of a 20 percent tax on sugar-sweetened beverages predicted that such a tax would lead to a 50 percent reduction in the number of overweight people in the United States in a five-year period. Hall 's new equation predicts about a 5 percent reduction in the percentage of overweight people in five years, Hall said.

Pass it on: New math models may be able to more accurately predict how much weight people will lose if they follow a specific diet and exercise regimen.

That's at a very slight decrease of 10 calories a day. That's less than a pat of butter.

I lost over 100 lbs since July 2011, by cutting back my calorie intake from roughtly 3400 per day to 800 per day, and walk about 6 miles a night in a sauna suit. I had to gradually work my way to those numbers, but i went from 361 lbs to 258 lbs. Goal is to be @ 200 lbs by July 4th, 2012. But in saying that, i tried many diets that did not work. Cutting out the "bad" calories and exercise is what worked for me...

Thanks Jeremy. Matt, Im not sure my exact calorie intake at the time, but i was shoving alot of unhealthy crap down my pie hole. It was gradual. I didnt just drop to 800, but its where i am now. I have taken to monitors my calorie intake, in detail. It was easier to reduce calories as the lbs went off. Dropped 28 lbs my first month.

the great thing is that BMI counts for more value/benefit than pure weight. fat weitht and muscle weight are two different things. lots of heavy lifting wont cause you to lose, maybe even gain, but you will be a lot better off for it. and for the over 50 crowd, you will naturally lose muscle mass and gain fat, so its double tough for you anyway. bowflex time, lol, 1 hour per day, 6 days a week, minimum breaks between exercises, ugh!

BMI is junk though and all it considers besides weight is height. Anyone that is remotely athletic will end up overweight by that measure. Look up the formulas the military uses to tell if recruits are overweight. They use circumferential measures of your neck and torso along with your weight, height, and maybe age too. Its a pretty good measure. Definitely better than BMI.

So if I want to loose my extra 200 lbs in 3 years I have to eat 2000 calories less per day???? That doesn't make any sense cause I eat 2000 a day..... So I would have to not eat anything for 3 years? lol.

If you are 200 lbs overweight, you will need more than 3 years to lose it in a healthy manner.

if calories out are greater than calories in you'll lose weight, its as simple as that. They keep trying to complicate things and convince you to buy into the next stupid fad. Dont do it.

This is so true!! My doctor told me after having a baby to multiply my goal weight times ten and that's how many calories i could consume and still lose weight with little to no exercise. So started counting calories and never exceeded 1200 a day. Exercised once I lost most of the weight bc it's easier to exercise when you aren't bigger and voila...goal met in less than a year - 101lbs lost total in just over a year. I don't go to the gym and started doing yoga simply to tone all over and be healthy. If you are too lazy to keep up with what you are putting into your body then don't expect much success. I don't eat 100% healthy but I don't eat junk and expect my clothing size to drop.

The calories-in part can be calculated, but the calories-out part is more complicated. Your body has a preferred set-point, and will lower the metabolism to maintain that weight (reducing calories-out without your noticing). You have to break past that set point and retrain your body to maintain a new weight.

The reasurch says it IS about eating less and exercising more, despite what the author says. If you do those things you will lose weight. If you exercise less and eat more you will gain weight. Nothing has changed, not even a little. Why are we always trying to find a way around that which we know to be true?

Fat is not just the bodies response to too many calories, it is also the way that the body will sequester toxins from the blood stream. So the number of calories is way less important than the type of calories. If you eat a 100 calories of processed white flour you will put on more fat than if you eat 300 calories of lettuce. That is because the body does not recognize the white flour as food and it causes the body's immune response to activate. There is no food value to the white flour. In contrast the lettuce has electrolytes, chlorophyll, vitamins, nutrients and enzymes. So your body knows exactly what to do with the lettuce and no fat is created.
It is not how many calories that is important, it is how nutrient dense those calories are or are not.

BMR X Physical activity - 500 calories. You'll lose weight. You can adjust the formula for every ten pounds. Look up BMR and physical activity, if you don't know what I'm talking about people. Your BMR is based on height, current weight, and age. Do about thirty to forty minutes of exercise a day, and you'll be in the best shape of your life.

Taxing soda would be no more effective at getting people to lose weight than taxing cigarettes has been. If you're addicted, you will come up with the extra money somehow. If you're determined to eat less or quit smoking, you will do so even if someone is giving the stuff away!

Really? 10 calories a day for three years??? This has to be a put on. 10 calories is almost immeasurable food wise, and people are not about to wait 3 years for change.

The math always seems to change, but nothing beats healthy nutrition and exercise and commitment. I lost 60 pounds 2 years ago and have kept it off. I was tired of all the misleading programs so I started a non-profit that provides a fitness and nutrition program that's 100% free. The equation is simple: commitment = results.
