New Westminster man saves woman from house fire

A New Westminster, B.C., man is being called a hero after rescuing a woman from the balcony of a burning home early Sunday morning.

David Francoeur, who lives across the alley from the home in the 900 block of Fourth Street, was working on his car just after 3 a.m. PT when he heard the fire burning.

After calling 911, he ran to help and found a woman trying to go back inside the home to save her pets. Francouer grabbed a ladder and convinced the woman to get out as the flames quickly spread.

"She was on the deck right by the door, it's where the fire was, the house was engulfed in fire," he said.

"I guess she was trying to go back inside the house, so when I went up I had to kind of physically drag her because she didn't want to leave."

The woman suffered from smoke inhalation.

Francoeur also helped two other residents on the main floor get out of the burning building safely.

Fire officials and neighbours are hailing Francouer as a hero.

"[He's] our neighbourhood hero ... it was a very brave thing to do," one local resident told CBC News.

But Francoeur dismisses the praise, saying he just reacted the way anyone would.

"I think it's — I won't say overkill, but just about," he said. "I think anybody would do the same thing."

I second that. I also hope that the lady's pets made it out ok.

Sadly, I have read in "The Province" that the lady's two dogs did not make it, but her cat did.

Yes, anyone would do it, but you did it! You are a hero and your modesty proves it along with your feat.

In this day and age, when people don't know their neighbours, and don't WANT to get to know their neighbours, where courtesy is a dated and nearly dead concept... where selfishness and self centredness is the new religion, it is nice to see someone who actually can care for someone else's life. When was the last time you stopped someone from being beaten up by a gang of people, or called the cops over the domestic abuse you hear down the street night after night. Next time, it could be you...

He just reacted the way anyone would? Wish he was right, but no. He is a hero! Not many people have a care for someone else, it is great to read there are some hero's still out there.

True story....think it was around 1969-70...when i lived in Vancouver that one nite when i was coming home from the bar. there was a apartment room on fire, no flames but smoke. It was just a slum room somewhere on Hastings.I never even thought twice . ( was half in the bag ) . and climbed the fire escape and kicked in one of the window , grabbed some old man that was in the bed and helped him out of the window and down to the street. I never waited around for the fire trucks but there was lots of people showing up.....the reason why i mention this is that i think this hero bit and all the news about it is is all bullshit...helping people is just a normal part of being human....no thanks needed or expected.....
