Winnipeg crews making progress on garbage pickup

Garbage crews in Winnipeg are expected to be caught up on trash and recycling pickup by 7 p.m. CT tonight, after falling behind in recent weeks.

Emterra, which holds the City of Winnipeg's garbage and recycling collection contract, could be penalized by the city if it is not caught up by the 6 p.m. Sunday.

As of 5:30 p.m., garbage collectors were making good progress but some streets in St. Vital may still need to get their yard waste picked up, city officials told CBC News.

The city says it will be cross-checking a list of streets after 7 p.m., when crews are expected to be finished.

Emterra has been struggling to keep up since a new collection system took effect across Winnipeg at the beginning of this month.

The city says its 311 hotline has fielded more than 5,400 "calls of service deficiencies" regarding the garbage collection service since Oct. 1.

If the deadline is not met, the city says it will look at some penalty options, such as hiring another company to finish the job and billing Emterra for the work.
