Winnipeg zoo sees record-high surge in December visits
It appears the city’s frigid weather didn’t stop nearly 10,000 Winnipeggers from taking in winter exhibits at the Assiniboine Park Zoo in December.
The zoo released a statement Friday saying it experienced the record-breaking December attendance last month. The zoo saw three times as much traffic as in 2013 and the highest amount of December visitors since 1991.
A zoo spokesperson attributed the rise in winter numbers in part to one of the zoo’s newer exhibits.
“The zoo has always been a great winter experience for families, but with the addition of the Journey to Churchill exhibit, it really is an entirely new experience,” said Laura Cabak, the zoo’s brand and communications manager.
“In many ways, animal activity is highest during the colder months and when you combine the beauty of the outdoor animal experiences with even more indoor venues, it really is a fantastic winter destination.”
The zoo said for those cold-averse animal lovers out there, it also offers warm, indoor exhibits during the winter months, like the Toucan Ridge, and the Gateway to the Arctic and Sea Ice Passage.
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
