Woman dies in boating incident at McGregor Lake, man still missing

RCMP have called off the search for a man who went missing on McGregor Lake, south of Calgary, late Sunday afternoon.

Vulcan RCMP were called to the lake after a witness spotted a boat adrift. Shortly after, a member of the public found the body of a 33-year-old woman on the shoreline.

Witnesses told police they had seen a man and a woman in their 30s heading out in the 6.5 meter pleasure craft earlier in the day. The woman was not wearing a life jacket and none was found on the boat.

On Monday evening, police said they had called off the search for the 37-year-old man after scouring the shoreline. After speaking with search and rescue workers, RCMP determined there was nowhere left to look.

"All indications point to the fact that he did go out in the boat and mostly likely he is still in the lake," said RCMP Sgt. Steve Vince .

"We are obviously keeping the investigation open and exploring any avenues that might develop...the search will obviously continue immediately with any new information we get."

RCMP say the couple is from Calgary but are not releasing their names.

Anyone who might have seen the two boaters at McGregor Lake is asked to contact the Vulcan RCMP detachment at 403-485-2267.
