A Hants County woman is dead and a man is facing impaired driving charges after an SUV plunged into a pond on Thursday night, trapping the woman inside.
RCMP said the fatal crash happened at a small pond off North River Road in Mosherville, Hants County.
Windsor District RCMP said the 911 call came at approximately 9 p.m.
"Our members arrived on scene and determined that there was one person in the vehicle that hadn't gotten out, later determined to be a female passenger who unfortunately was pronounced dead at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor," said Const. George Cameron.
"As far as we can tell so far, the vehicle had been down a small lane."
The driver of the SUV was arrested and he's expected to be charged with impaired driving causing death.
The name of the woman has not been released.
Windsor RCMP Const. Andy Harris told CBC News the SUV was a 1986 Suzuki Samurai. He said when officers arrived at the scene on Friday morning to retrieve the vehicle, it was mostly submerged under the ice with only the rear tire on the driver's side and part of the tailgate showing.
"We had to come in with an excavator, we couldn't get a tow truck into the area so we had an excavator coming on the wood road and basically lowered its boom, we chained onto the back of it and hauled it out of the pond," he said Friday.
"These are old wood roads and the terrain is just not suitable, you couldn't get a tow truck back here at all."
Harris said the area is often used as a recreation spot for all-terrain vehicles and off-roading.
