Woman says she was sexually assaulted at Mexican hotel

A Mexican resort vacation turned into a nightmare for a Saskatoon woman who alleges she was sexually harassed by a hotel employee.

Tanis Macala said she was attending a friend's wedding at the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Hotel and Spa from Jan. 20 to 27 when on the second night, a male staff member entered her room and made advances at her.

"He started to try and take my clothes off, and then he began to touch me in places that he shouldn't have," Macala told CBC News on Sunday.

"He kept asking me, 'How do you like this? Is this good? Let me touch you.'"

The same employee harassed her and a female friend — the same friend who was getting married — over the next few days, according to a post Macala wrote on her blog on Saturday.

In the first incident, Macala said she repeatedly asked the employee to leave her room. She later grabbed his work radio and yelled at him to leave, which she said he did.

But Macala said a couple nights later, she was returning to her room when the same man phoned her to announce he was coming over.

Macala said she ran out onto the beach, but he drove up behind her in a golf cart, asking her where she was going.

Macala said her newly-married friend was inappropriately touched by a resort employee on another night.

Macala said resort management did not take their complaints seriously, despite the amount of money they had spent there.

The managers even asked a friend to leave the resort after she grabbed the man's arm while trying to apprehend him, Macala said.

"They said to my girlfriend that assaulting a staff member is completely unacceptable; it will not be tolerated in the hotel," she said. "We looked at each other, like, in shock."

No one from the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Hotel and Spa was available to comment on Sunday.

Macala said she is warning people to be careful while on vacation. She is advising against travelling alone, even at five-star resorts.

"I don't want to paint a bad picture about Mexico as a whole because it was very select few individuals that we were dealing with," she said.

"I guess the whole point I want to get out there is to be safe."

Some of the Mexican resorts that I have been to - the worker will be fired immediately if caught in a guest's room for pleasure! They are poor and need the job! Most Canadians don't understand how poor some of these people are!

Most people in the rich nations like Canada don't understand how the rest of the world views us. They see us as ALL as rich, spoiled children who don't have to deal with the everyday struggle just to survive. That people who work in many of these thrid world resorts are only inches away from a life of picking left-overs out of resturant trash bins.
They have little or no respect for us and will take you for everything you have if they could. they especially veiw white women as mere sex objects, much of this attitude comes from western media/movies and advertising which turns women into sex objects and/or protrays westerns as trite and not to be taken seriously.

The more I read the story's - the more I sense someone looking for attention! Why do you call room service at night looking for a lighter after leaving your friends? To light a candle so you can fall asleep and die from setting a hotel on fire? (makes another story) No to spark up a joint!!!!! Did she request the best looking server to bring it? Was she toying with him earlier? Why answer the door after going to bed? Why was the door not chained? Why not run out screaming as he was downing her tequila? If she has run into these altercations before and is stronger than most - then why didn't she have more control of the situation? Where did these other situations happen? Did she blog these in Canada and report them? Why isn't she street smart already? Why enter a swim suit competition after this happens? I can see being in a swimsuit - but why flaunt yourself after this? All kinds of guys will be checking you out like the pervs , creeps and normal guys and even girls!!! Check out her blog/ twitter and see how she is advertising herself! I know that flaunting is not permission to touch her, but it is an invitation in a creeps mind! Street smart!!! Why not tell your friends as it was a scary situation wasn't it? Doesn't matter if it is before the wedding day or not! Safety is number 1!!!!!! Why let your friend come back to the hotel by herself in Mexico or any county as far as that! That is worse than letting your friend drive home drunk!!!!!! Where was the husband?? Does she mention how much she was drinking? Or if drugs were involved? Does she mention the theft of the golf cart and damage done to it and with it? I would love to hear the other story! As we know , there is her story, his story, the resorts story and the truth!!!! Truly I think she wants more attention in all ways from finding a man to marketing herself in business!!!!!! Her moment of fame just increased! No matter what, I am just glad that she never got murdered!

Hard to believe that any Canadian woman would be stupid enough to allow this to go on. I'm more inclined to believe she's setting herself up for a lawsuit.

When woman is alone and these things happen at once call the police or leave the hotel and or fly back home, even it will cost you a bit to save your life. You are lucky he did not beat you.
Please women for the God sake don't go alone these resorts. Take some one with you or stay in Canada.
I think those who go alone they want to enjoy their life, with out any other person to know. Other wise why woman will go alone these kind of places?

With all the negative press Mexico has gotten over the past 5 years, why do people continue to go there?? They know that they are in a High Risk country, so if they elect to travel there, they should expect to be assaulted or at least harrased. If that's the risk you're prepared to take then fine, just don't whine when it happens.

I have traveled to Mexico for several years, and each year was getting more and more scary so i quit travelling there. The last trip was in 2009. Here is some tips for those who will continue to travel there.
Do not stay in a five star hotel, they are targets for scams of every kind.
Do not make hotel reservations before you go. It gives the staff an upper hand in providing your information before you arrive.
Most places in tourist Mexico, have really great thee star and four star hotel off the beaten path, There are vacancies you will be surprised at how secure they are and how well you are treated, They are small so you are well know by the staff. The scammers do not target these places.
Do not travel in a taxi or rent a car, the scammers have their tentacles here also, Usually the resort areas are small enough to use public transpiration and the divers all speak English if they don't then they are lying since that is a prerequiset for their job. Never travel alone.
It is a good idea to have a local friend who can help you with questions etc, who is not any of the hotel staff .

I am an aware and alert kind of guy when travelling there, and even at that I had my camera stolen and my prescription glasses. Taken from my beach bag from the beach.

If you are there for awhile dress down, remove jewellery

I speak Spanish enough to get by and this helps also.

I used to have a great time on each of my visits but the last visit there was certainly a sense of unease and danger in the air.

I know this will not be popular, but you sound exactly like the type of tourist that gives Canadians a bad name.

I have owned property in Mexico for several years, and am continually embarrassed by the behavior of Canadians flocking to Mexico for their cheap vacations.

No one deserves to be attacked or assaulted. However, there are a few simple steps that you can take to avoid the type of thing this woman is ‘alleging’.

First, lock the door. Any resort I have stayed in has deadbolts and locking bars across the doors. Even the windows have locks. This will keep staff with master keys out. I would not stay in a hotel room anywhere without one….including one in Canada. The Grand Sirenis has them.

Secondly, travel in groups. What on earth was the new bride doing on her own leaving Coco Bongo, in downtown Playa and travelling to her resort half an hour out of town on her own? Was the groom already passed out?

Sounds like true love to me.

I watch Canadians at resorts start drinking at 9 a.m. daily, stuff their faces at the buffet restaurants all day long for a week, burn themselves like lobsters, and then complain of ‘food poisoning’. Give me a break. Could you do that at home and feel well?

If you are travelling to a foreign country, you should pay some attention to the culture. If you notice, Mexican women do not parade around in public in string bikinis. The culture in the Mayan Riviera is primarily conservative Mayan and Catholicism. They cover themselves up and they are very quiet. If you parade around half naked, ‘dancing without a care in the world’, hooting and hollering, do not be surprised if creepy men think you want to get laid. They have already slept with many Canadian women. And British women. And Argentinian women. It happens quite often. Mexico has not had 25 years of ‘No Means No’ publicity campaigns. Many people are fortunate to get an elementary school education.

This whole write up sounds to me like someone who wants some attention, and who ‘had a traumatic experience’ but couldn’t actually stop partying long enough to figure out a sensible solution.

Canadians live such a coddled existence that we seem to think we can go on vacation to a foreign country for a week or two, pay the package price, get a free pass and leave all common sense and personal responsibility at home.

Mexico is a foreign country. The laws are different, the culture is different, the language is different. Mexicans do not enjoy the rights and privileges we do. Life is hard for them. Tourism is one way that many honest people are trying to earn a living. People working at the resorts have an annual income less than this wedding party’s bar tab. If you cannot understand and have some respect for these differences, then please stay home and don’t embarrass the rest of us who will enjoy Mexico even more without you.

Simple. Stay away from the place. Corruption is so well entrenched in all aspects of mexican life and business its a no win scenario. We lived in Mexico for about 10 years and finaly sold our place because of the crime and corruption.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Paolo Gabriele was always a reserved, almost shy man, as his position required. He had access to the most private rooms in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace - Pope Benedict's apartment. Was it money? Probably not. ...
