    Winnipeg records first homicide of 2012

    Winnipeg police are investigating the city's first homicide of 2012 after a woman was found inside a downtown apartment.

    Officers were called to the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue at about 10 p.m. Monday.

    A 34-year-old woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.

    The cause of her injuries are under investigation by the police service's homicide unit.

    Police have not released any additional information but family members of the woman told CBC News that she recently came to Canada from Eritrea.

    Members of the city's Eritrean community are expected to gather at a community centre on Tuesday to offer support to the woman's family.

    Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

      Eritrea, Somalia. A good chunk of murders and other violent crimes in Winnipeg come from refugees from the Horn Of Africa. They come to the promised land and forget to (or can't) lose the baggage from the old country. If you factor out the African contingent of mayhem, we probably wouldn't be referring to the affected cities as Murderpeg or Deadmonton. Or maybe not. Glad I don't live there anymore, regardless.
