Yellowhead Trail crash: 2 killed, 3 injured in early morning collision

Police say the driver of a car that caused a crash that killed two people on Yellowhead Trail this morning was trying to avoid an RCMP checkstop.

Police say at least three people were in the Toyota Camry when it made a U-turn ahead of an RCMP checkstop on 17th Street. The car then started driving against traffic west on Yellowhead Trail.

Shortly after, it collided head-on with a Mercedes travelling the other direction.

The Mercedes then collided with another car, a Chevy Cobalt.

The man driving the Camry, 21, as well as a 21-year-old female passenger, were killed. A second passenger, a 22-year-old man, was seriously injured.

The man driving the Mercedes, 33, was also severely injured.

Police say the 23-year-old woman driving the Cobalt was treated in hospital and then released.

Officers closed Yellowhead Trail between Victoria Trail and 50 Street for several hours during the investigation. They say speed and alcohol are thought to be factors.

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team will conduct a review of the investigation.
