Man charged with aggravated assault after 'very violent' stabbing in Whitby, male critically hurt

Durham police say they have charged with a man with aggravated assault after a "very violent" stabbing in Whitby, Ont. left a male critically injured on Thursday.

The stabbing happened at Motel 6 at 165 Consumers Rd., according to the Durham Regional Police Service. Police were called to the scene at 3:07 p.m.

Paramedics took the victim, who was stabbed in the upper body, to a Toronto trauma centre.

The accused, 27, is in custody.

Duty Insp. Sean Sitaram, spokesperson for Durham police, told reporters at the scene that the accused fled the motel but was captured by officers a short distance away.

Sitaram said officers from a number of divisions in Whitby and Oshawa, along with the Durham police canine unit and its helicopter, searched for the man and located him.

"Officers converged on this location to look for an outstanding suspect that fled from this location into a greenbelt just east of here," he said.

The man was arrested, he added.

Police are likely to be at the scene for some time and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

"We're collecting statements from the people that were staying at this location, as well as reviewing video surveillance," Sitaram said.

Other motel guests heard screaming

Shyann Blue and Andrew Wells. two people who were staying at the motel, reported hearing someone screaming at the top of their lungs in a nearby room.

"Basically me and my boyfriend were just laying in bed and we just started hearing screaming and at first we thought it was just somebody ... being weird or something," Blue said.

When the couple walked out, they saw the hotel managers, who said they were just asking the people to leave. The couple then went to get food, but came back to see police surrounding the hotel.

The couple, who are expecting to get a refund, said they saw the victim carried out on a stretcher.
