Bail hearing set for man arrested after standoff with Fredericton police

A Fredericton man, who was arrested after he barricaded himself in a downtown apartment building for seven hours on Thursday evening, appeared in court on Friday.

The man, who is in his late 30s, was brought into Fredericton Provincial Court for a breach of an undertaking from June 9.

He appeared before Judge Julian Dickson in a grey, hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants.

There was no comment on the nature of his charges, but both the Crown and the defence rejected the man's release from custody.

A bail hearing was set for Aug. 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Fredericton.

Standoff on Aberdeen Street

Police used tear gas to get the man out of the building on the 200 block of Aberdeen Street, late Thursday night.

About 12 to 15 police officers responded to the standoff, which began at about 6 p.m.

Sgt. Jason Forward of the Fredericton police said the street was blocked off and people were evacuated from the building from 6 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday, when the man was arrested.

Sgt. Justin LeBlanc said police were not able to peacefully resolve the situation, so alternative tactics such as tear gas were needed.

"The suspect is fine and suffered no injuries," said LeBlanc.

At around 12:30 a.m., a woman who was also inside the building was detained by police and later released. Both the man and woman were known to one another.

No one else was injured but the surrounding area was also cordoned off to the public.

"There was no real danger to the public but we always take precautions," said Forward.

Forward said the man was known to police, who had a warrant for his arrest. He said police were looking for him over the course of several days.

This was not the first time the man has been arrested, said Forward.

Members from the Fredericton Police Force's primary response team, emergency response team and major crime team, including the canine team, were on the scene. Paramedics and firefighters were also there.

"Any time we're going to use different techniques, just for safety precautions we like to have the fire department and the ambulance on standby," said LeBlanc.

Forward said the man is expected to appear in court on Friday. Police would not comment on the nature of the charges.
