Grandson accused of killing grandmother, injuring personal support worker
A man appeared in a Toronto courtroom on Sunday after he was charged in a stabbing that left his grandmother dead and his grandfather's personal support worker injured.
Michael Colastosti, 31, of Toronto, has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He will remain in custody and his next court date is in October.
Police identified his grandmother as Elena Marcucci, 84, of Toronto. She died of her injuries at the scene in a house on Acme Crescent, near Kipling Avenue and Dixon Road.
Colastosti lived in the house with his grandparents. Police said they were called to the scene at 6:37 p.m. for a report of unknown trouble.
When officers arrived, they found the grandmother and personal support worker "suffering from obvious trauma as a result of stab wounds," police said.
Police said the younger woman was found in a parking lot on the southeast corner of Kipling Avenue and Dixon Road, while the older woman was found in the house.
The personal support worker, 32, who was injured in the stabbing, is in hospital. She was taken there with life-threatening injuries, but her condition was later upgraded to stable.
Good Samaritan helped victim until paramedics arrived
Nurullah Haidari said he and his friends saw the 32-year-old woman "terrified" and trying to get away from the attacker, and they immediately jumped into action.
"She was walking and yelling for help," Haidari said.
He said a boy who was with the injured woman was on the phone with the paramedics or 911.
"I grabbed the phone from the young boy, and I talked with the paramedic or policeman . . . I was helping her, she was a caregiver and she was telling me what to do. My both hands were filled with blood."
Haidari said he and his friends stayed with the woman until the police and paramedics arrived.
