Cary man killed, Apex man injured in fiery, head-on crash on NC 55 in Cary

One person is dead and another has life-threatening injuries after a highway crash Monday afternoon on N.C. 55.

The crash happened after 1 p.m. between Mahal Avenue and the entrance ramp to 540 when a southbound SUV entered the northbound lanes and hit another SUV head-on, causing both to catch fire, according to ABC11, The News & Observer’s newsgathering partner.

The driver of the southbound SUV, 67-year-old Robert McKinnon of Cary, died at the scene, police said.

The other driver, 55-year-old Xiucheng Feng of Apex. was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The road was expected to be closed until rush hour traffic started Monday afternoon, ABC11 reported.
