A woman is dead and a man is in hospital with critical injuries after a residential fire in Toronto's west end early Tuesday, according to the city's fire chief and paramedics.

Crews responded to the fire just after midnight on Rusholme Road north of College Street in Dufferin Grove, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Toronto paramedics said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire and three additional adults were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Pegg said the man and woman were found during a search of the residence and immediately turned over to paramedics.

"I extend our deepest condolences to family, friends and all those impacted by this tragic incident," Pegg said in his post.

He said the fire has been extinguished. Fire investigators will now work with Toronto police and the Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal to investigate its cause, Pegg added.

Coun. Alejandra Bravo, who represents the area, expressed condolences to the family of the woman who died in a post on social media.

"I appreciate the work of the brave firefighters at [Toronto fire] who responded to this emergency," Bravo said.
