1 dead as car slams through wall at west end machine shop

A man is dead after a car slammed through a wall at Mayson Machining on Windsor's west just before midnight Sunday.

Windsor police say a blue Chrysler minivan was travelling north on Prince Road at high rate of speed when he went through the stop sign at Sandwich Street, crossed the road, hit a large boulder in front of Mayson Machining and then slammed into the building.

Photos from the scene showed a vehicle amid rubble from the building.

Windsor police officers arrived to find the minivan fully engulfed in flames and filled with smoke.

Officers were unable to get through the front doors so they used batons to smash the side and rear windows to get inside. The officers tried to pull the man out through the back of the van but couldn't.

The 35-year-old man was pronounced deceased.

The scene was cleared by about 6 a.m. but a gaping hole at Mayson Machining remains and a portion of the manufacturer's parking lot is cordoned off with yellow police tape.
