Cyclist killed in collision near Cochrane, alcohol believed to be a factor

A cyclist is dead after a collision near Cochrane, Alta., on Wednesday evening, RCMP said in an emailed release.

Police responded at about 5:30 p.m. to the collision between a cyclist and an SUV on Highway 22. It happened several kilometres north of the Highway 1A and Highway 22 intersection.

Police said the 54-year-old cyclist from Cochrane was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the vehicle, a 58-year-old Cochrane man, was taken by EMS to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries," reads a news release from RCMP on Thursday.

"Police believe that alcohol was a factor in this collision and the investigation continues."

The RCMP said officers are still looking for more witnesses and would like to speak with anyone whose vehicle may have been struck on Sunset Drive prior to the fatality.
