A 74-year-old man was found dead after a home on Marine Street in Pictou, N.S., was severely damaged in a fire on Christmas morning.

The Pictou Fire Department and RCMP were called to the fire just after 1 a.m. local time to find the house engulfed in flames, according to a news release.

Police say due to the severity of the fire and unsafe conditions from the damage, the victim was found inside the home on Sunday. No one else was inside the residence at the time.

Pictou fire Chief Paul Janes said several departments helped battle the blaze, including Abercrombie Volunteer Fire Department, Caribou District Fire Department and New Glasgow Fire Department.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious, however the investigation is ongoing.
