Donald Beckles ID'd as victim of Etobicoke shooting

Toronto police are investigating the city's latest homicide after a shooting at a townhouse near Martin Grove Rd. and Finch Ave. West.

Investigators say 46-year-old Donald Beckles was shot multiple times outside his home at 163 Jamestown Cres. on Monday night.

He was rushed to Etobicoke General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Det. Murray Barnes of the homicide unit told reporters Tuesday morning that Beckles was a stay-at-home dad with a wife and two children.

Barnes said Beckles was watching TV while his family slept and, at about 11 p.m., went outside to have a cigarette on his porch, where he was gunned down.

"We believe it was a targeted shooting," Barnes told reporters. "What he was targeted for still remains unclear at this time."

Barnes said Beckles was hearing impaired and "probably didn't hear the people coming up to him."

Beckles did not have a criminal record, Barnes said. His death marks the city's 11th homicide of 2015.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the area. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the homicide unit at 416-808-7400 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
