Person dies in northeast Calgary house fire

One person has died after a house fire in northeast Calgary Saturday night.

The Calgary Fire Department was alerted of the blaze in the 100 block of 25th Avenue N.E. at about 11:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a significant amount of smoke and flames both inside and outside of the single-family home.

A second alarm was called, bringing more firefighters to the scene to assist with getting the fire under control.

Acting Batt. Chief Hank Ormstrup said the blaze was mainly in the kitchen when firefighters entered the building.

One person was found dead when crews searched the house. Another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials did not provide information on the age or gender of the deceased.

Isabelle Cheung has lived in the area for more than two decades, and said the house has developed a reputation among neighbours in recent years.

"If there's one word that came to mind, it was sketchy," Cheung said. "I see people from all walks of life. Normal people, really sketchy-looking people, in and out of the house all the time. I don't even know who lived there because there's just different faces every time."

Other neighbours said some windows in the home had been boarded up due to previous damage.

Fire investigators and the Calgary police arson unit are investigating the cause of the fire.

They're asking anyone who was in the area or has video from before the fire broke out to email them.

There have been a number of house fires in Calgary in recent weeks, something that is concerning to fire officials.

Fire Chief Steve Dongworth will address the topic at a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.
