1 dead after van crashes into Nygard International building

The male driver of a van that crashed into a Winnipeg building and caught fire Friday morning has died, police say.

Just before 5:45 a.m., the white van drove into the side of the Nygard International building on Notre Dame Avenue west of Weston Street, a spokesperson for the Winnipeg police said.

The male driver was the only person in the van. The fire started inside the van after the crash, the spokesperson said.

Earlier Friday morning, police said the driver was taken to hospital in critical condition. Shortly after 11:30 a.m., police amended that statement to say the individual died at the scene.

Westbound lanes of Notre Dame Avenue were still closed just before 8 a.m. and police were still at the scene.

The spokesperson said police will likely be there for several hours.

Police are still working to determine the cause of the crash and are looking for possible witnesses. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6271 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
