1 injured in shooting at Vanier restaurant

One person is in hospital and police are looking for three suspects in a shooting at a fast-food restaurant in Vanier Wednesday night.

Three men entered a Burger King restaurant at 199 Montreal Road around 6 p.m. and got into a confrontation with another man inside, according to police. Multiple gunshots were fired, the victim was struck and the three men ran out of the restaurant.

The man, who is known to police, was taken hospital and his injuries are not considered life-threatening. Police have not located the suspects and believe the incident was a targeted shooting.

In a statement, the company said it hopes the man makes a full recovery. The franchise owner is offering counselling to employees and will begin leaving the lights in its parking lot from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. for added safety, Burger King said.

'They need to do their bit'

Charlotte Taylor's back porch overlooks the restaurant's parking lot. She told CBC Radio's All In A Day she often sees people exchanging packages at all times of day and night. She said calls to police and the City of Ottawa went largely unheeded until two summers ago when, police increased their presence in the area.

However, she feels the restaurant has done little to address the ongoing problems.

"We need Burger King to be more responsible to this community. They need to do their bit."

The restaurant is closed for the evening and the Ottawa police guns and gangs unit is asking any witnesses to come forward. The unit can be reached at 613-236-1222 ext. 5050.
