Alex Asmis named as victim of fatal crash near Algonquin College

The victim of a single-vehicle crash near Algonquin College early Thursday has been identified as Alex Asmis, a student at the college and player on the school's soccer team.

The collision happened at about 3 a.m. on Deerfield Drive, off Baseline Road and Navaho Drive. Four young men were in the vehicle at the time.

The red hatchback ended up on its roof, according to firefighters. Three of the men managed to get out on their own but Asmis, who was unconscious, was trapped.

Fire crews removed a driver's side door to get him out and he was taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died in hospital from his injuries.

Asmis, 21, was student in the civil engineering program at Algonquin College and a member of the Algonquin Thunder men's soccer team.

Flags were lowered to half-mast on Algonquin's campus in his memory.

Asmis was also the son of an Ottawa firefighter, according to a Facebook post by Ottawa fire Chief Gerry Pingitore on Thursday.

The crash also sent a 22-year-old man to hospital in serious but stable condition. Two others, both 24, were assessed at the scene but did not need to be taken to hospital.

Ottawa police are investigating.
