Cyclist killed after pickup truck hit by streetcar collides with him

Truck driver charged with careless driving after cyclist killed in Parkdale last month

A male cyclist is dead after a collision in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood Wednesday morning, involving a pickup truck and a streetcar.

It happened shortly after 9 a.m. at King Street West and Cowan Avenue.

Const. Clint Stibbe told CBC Toronto that a pickup truck travelling southbound on Cowan Avenue attempted to cross King Street and was hit by a westbound streetcar. The vehicle went out of control as a result of the collision and struck a nearby cyclist.

Toronto paramedics transported the cyclist to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Stibbe said the man was pronounced dead in hospital.

There is no information about his age or identity.

'We have got to build safer streets'

"It's a tragic incident," said Cycle Toronto's executive director Jared Kolb, who was at city hall where the public works commitee was being asked to approve the Bloor Street bike lanes.

"There's far too many pedestrians and cyclists in this city who are being hit, who are being seriously injured and who are being killed.

"I think as a city we have got to come to grips with that, and we have got to build safer streets," he said.
