1 person dead after 2-alarm fire in Scarborough apartment building
One person has died and four others were hospitalized following a two-alarm fire in a highrise apartment building in Scarborough on Saturday, according to Toronto Fire.
Police said the fire broke out on the 5th floor of a building at the intersection of Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue just before 3:30 p.m.
Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said crews located a number of occupants inside the building, one of whom later died.
Pegg said crews successfully rescued an additional four people during the course of their operation.
He said all four have been transported to hospital by Toronto Paramedic Services.
"The most recent information that I have is that two of those four are listed in critical condition. The other two are listed in serious but non-life-threatening condition," he said.
Pegg said the fire has now been extinguished and fire crews are continuing to work on the scene.
He said Toronto Community Housing and the TTC have made arrangements for emergency shelter provisions for residents of the building.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and Pegg said the Ontario fire marshal's office is being notified.
