1 person in hospital after being shot by police in Mission, B.C.
A 33-year-old man is in hospital after being shot by police Wednesday morning on a set of train tracks near Lougheed Highway in Mission, B.C.
At 8:15 a.m., Mission RCMP say they received a complaint that a man had allegedly stolen a knife and merchandise from a grocery store in the 32000 block of Lougheed Highway and was last seen walking into nearby bushes.
According to IHIT, he was then shot by a CP Police Service officer,
Mission RCMP said, in a statement, the suspect fled but was caught and arrested.
IHIT now investigating
In a tweet, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirmed it was deployed to the scene after the shooting.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., a civilian-led body that conducts investigations into police-involved incidents that result in serious injury or death, will not be investigating.
Because the incident happened on federal rail land, it is outside the office's jurisdiction, said Marten Youssef, the public engagement and policy director for the IIO.
However since the case is an "unusual circumstance," Mission RCMP said IHIT would take conduct of the investigation.
CP Rail did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A section of the railway track was closed temporarily as part of the investigation but has now reopened.
Correction : An earlier version of this story said the man was shot by the RCMP. In fact, IHIT says he was shot by a CP Police Service officer.(Nov 22, 2017 9:34 PM)
