Black History Month: 10 Canadians You Should Know

Josiah Henson
(1789 – 1883)
Henson was born into slavery, and escaped to Canada in 1830.
He founded the Dawn Settlement near Dresden, Upper Canada and served as its spirital leader.
Henson is believed to be the inspiration for the lead character in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
