(1823 – 1893)
Shadd was the first black female publisher in North America, and was the first woman publisher in Canada.
She founded and edited The Provincial Freeman, first published in 1853. The paper publicized the successes of the black men and women who lived in Canada West.
Shadd later became one of the first black women to complete a law degree.
