Black History Month: 10 Canadians You Should Know

Viola Desmond
(1914 – 1965)
Nova Scotia-born Desmond was a businesswoman.
In 1946, she refused to leave a Whites-Only section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow, and was arrested and charged for an unrelated offense.
In 2010 Desmond was pardoned. In 2018, she became the first Canadian woman to be featured on our currency.
