1,000 people to return COVID-19 relief payouts over wrong declarations: Josephine Teo
SINGAPORE — About 1,000 people will have to return their COVID-19 relief payouts from the government under a help scheme for self-employed individuals, according to media reports.
An audit has shown that the individuals had made erroneous declarations in their applications, Manpower Minister Josephine Teo told Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 5).
The individuals affected form 0.5 per cent of about 200,000 successful applicants under the Self-Employed Person Income Relief Scheme (Sirs).
Teo was responding during a parliamentary discussion on a question filed by Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim on the proportion of Sirs payouts being affected by clawbacks and the main reasons for this.
Eligible self-employed persons were given three quarterly cash payouts totalling $9,000 to cope with the economic impact of the pandemic. They have to meet requirements including gross income of up to $100,000 a year and not owning more than one property.
