$12M Edmonton blaze prompts arson probe

Edmonton firefighter had to contend with frigid temperature overnight as they battled a blaze that caused an estimated $12 million in damage.

Arson investigators are at the scene of a major fire in Edmonton that destroyed eight businesses overnight and caused an estimated $12 million in damage.

District Fire Chief Lorne Corbett says the blaze started in a Bonanza restaurant in a strip mall on 125th Street and 137th Avenue around 1:30 a.m. after a pickup truck was driven into the front of the restaurant. It's unclear what happened to the driver.

The fire spread quickly from the restaurant to neighbouring businesses.

One firefighter has been taken to hospital, but the nature of his injuries aren't clear.

Eighty firefighters fought the blaze in temperatures dipping to –23 C. Because of the extreme cold, firefighters had to use steam units to keep water flowing through hoses and hydrants.

More to come.
