$14.5 million Teslin bridge repair tender cancelled

A tender to repair a bridge in Teslin has been cancelled.

The Nisutlin Bay Bridge on the Alaska Highway was set to receive $14.5 million in renovations in the next two years.

Now it’s going back to the drawing board because the government says it needs more consultation.

Sandy Silver is leader of the Yukon Liberal Party.

He says the government should have decided on a final plan before letting companies bid.

“Contractors and the private sector have spent thousands of dollars preparing bids for major jobs, just to see the government pull the rug from underneath them.”

Premier Darrell Pasloski defended the action to withdraw the contract.

“The Liberal leader will demand that we go forward with a project, but then he would also criticize us if the community’s not happy,” he said in the legislature.

“This is very simple. There were still concerns that rose from the First Nation and from the community.”

Renovations to the Nisutlin Bay Bridge were announced in this year's budget address.

Work includes a new concrete floor and replacement of the steel grate deck.
