14-year-old boy biking to school is run over and killed in crosswalk, Texas cops say
A driver has been arrested in the death of a 14-year-old who was run over while biking to school, Texas authorities say.
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Officials said in a news briefing streamed by KHOU the fatal crash happened just after 6:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28. The 14-year-old boy was in his neighborhood and riding his bike to school when he was struck in a crosswalk, sheriff’s officials said.
The boy was given CPR by a good Samaritan, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Fort Bend Sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Skelton said in the news briefing. The teen has not been publicly identified as of Friday morning.
The driver, 20-year-old Devin Delvalle, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities, the sheriff’s office said. He was not believed to be intoxicated, Skelton said.
Delvalle was later charged with motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian within a crosswalk, according to the sheriff.
“This is a very sad and tragic incident on both sides, for the driver, and especially for the victim’s family,” Sheriff Eric Fagan said in a statement on Facebook. “Drivers need to slow down and pay attention, and that’s extremely important in areas that are heavily traveled by children.”
Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian Middleton said in a statement to KHOU the teen “died needlessly” and called the collision “avoidable.”
The teen was a student at Cinco Ranch High School, KTRK and Katy Magazine reported.
“The Cinco Ranch High School community is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of one of our students,” Katy Independent School District said in a statement to the publications. “We extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the family during this difficult time and offer them our love and support while protecting their right to privacy.”
Cinco Ranch High School is in Katy, about 30 miles west of Houston.
