14-year-old in custody, accused of bringing loaded handgun to SC school, authorities say

A high school student accused of bringing a loaded gun to school is in custody after, according to Richland County Sheriff deputies.

The 14-year-old student at Westwood High School in Blythewood was charged Monday with possession of a weapon on school grounds and possession of a weapon under 18.

School officials were alerted to the weapon after the student went through a metal detector at 9 a.m. Monday.

Following the alert, the student was taken to a school administrator who found a handgun in the student’s book bag, according to the sheriff’s department.

A Richland County school resource officer confirmed the presence of the loaded weapon, indicating that gun was not stolen but taken from the student’s home, authorities said.

The student was transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.
