18-year-old set to play college football falls from parking deck fourth floor, cops say

An 18-year-old athlete was seriously injured after he fell four stories from a parking garage in Georgia, police said.

Tyler Bradwell Douthit was recognized as an outstanding football player with Woodstock High School in Athens and is a signee for Samford University in Alabama as an offensive lineman, he shared on Twitter. Douthit was named WSBTV’s key scholar-athlete in the fall.

Just before 3 a.m. March 19, Athens-Clarke County police responded to a call that someone had fallen from the parking deck in downtown Athens. The responding officer found Douthit “laying at the bottom of the stairs near the entrance” to the garage, according to a police incident report.

Douthit hit the railings of the stairs after falling from the fourth floor and was taken to a medical facility with undisclosed injuries, according to the report. He was admitted into the intensive care unit, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Police told multiple news outlets there was no evidence of foul play.

The responding officer did not find anything “out of the ordinary” after searching the parking deck, according to the incident report. Security officials told police another person was with Douthit in the parking garage before he fell, and video shows an individual running away from the parking deck close to the time Douthit reportedly fell, police said in the incident report.

Douthit was named Woodstock High School’s most outstanding senior athlete the week prior to his fall and received 21 football scholarship offers, WSBTV reported.

“We are devastated by the news of Tyler’s injuries,” Cherokee County School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower told WSBTV. “Tyler is an outstanding student athlete with a huge circle of people who care about him. He and his family are in my prayers.”
