Beaches International Jazz Festival fire damages 2 apartment units

Toronto Fire Services say a fire that broke out in the middle of the Beaches International Jazz Festival damaged two units and forced apartment residents out of a building for an hour and a half.

The fire at 101 Glen Manor Drive, south of Queen Street East, started just after 8 p.m. Friday on a balcony of the three-storey building.

Toronto Fire Services Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said the fire was out by 8:30 p.m., although firefighters continued to put out hot spots. Toronto Fire Services said they received reports of thick, black smoke billowing from the building.

Ratushniak said residents were allowed back into their units by 9:40 p.m., but he did not know how many people were forced to leave.

The fire spread to a second balcony on the third floor of the complex and extended to the roof of the building, above a Royal LePage real estate office at the southeast corner of Queen Street East and Glen Manor Drive.

No one was injured in the blaze and the extent of damage is not yet known. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In total, 35 firefighters and nine fire trucks were deployed to the scene.
