2 dead in separate overnight highway collisions

Two people are dead after separate collisions overnight on Ontario highways.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were called just before 2 a.m. to the Highway 401 off-ramp to Brock Road in Pickering where a car drove into the back of a tanker truck at the traffic lights on the ramp.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old man from Pickering, was trapped inside the vehicle before he was extricated and was pronounced dead at the scene

Police say the truck had spilled some of the fluid it was carrying but there were no environmental concerns.

The ramp to Brock Road was closed for the investigation but has since reopened.

Earlier on Wednesday night a 61-year-old woman died in hospital after a two-vehicle crash in Burlington.

Police said the victim was the driver of one of the cars that was reportedly travelling at a high speed before rolling several times.

"Obviously it was a tragic night last night with these two separate fatal collisions," said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.
