2 dogs kill goat and donkey at farm in Dufferin

Dog that killed goat, donkey at Dufferin farm not rabid

RCMP are warning the public after two dogs killed a goat and donkey at a farm in Dufferin over the weekend.

One of the dogs lunged at the farmer as well, but the farmer was not injured, Cpl. Scott MacKenzie, of the St. Stephen detachment, said in a statement.

Although one of the dogs was captured, the other one is still on the loose, said MacKenzie.

It's described as being a dark-coloured bulldog with porcupine quills in and around its face.

"It is uncertain how injured the dog is or if it is diseased," said MacKenzie.

About a dozen cases of rabies have been confirmed in the Charlotte County area in the past year, public health officials have said.

Most of the cases have been reported in the past three months, and involved raccoons.

Rabies is a viral disease that infects the nervous system and spreads to the brain. It can be lethal for animals and humans, if not treated right away.

The dog attacks occurred at a farm on Todds Point Road.

The owners of the goat and donkey that were killed declined to comment. They don't want to lay blame, they said.

The owner of the dogs says they escaped from their pen that was damaged during the winter.

She told CBC News she has surrendered both of the mixed-breed dogs. The one that was captured has since been euthanized, she said, adding she believes the missing one has been shot by a local resident.

RCMP are asking the public to be on the lookout for the dog in question, said MacKenzie.

Anyone who sees the dog is advised not to approach it, but to call police immediately with its location, he said.
