Body of former Metro Vancouver man recovered from Mexican lake
The bodies of two Canadians, one of whom was from Metro Vancouver and an American have been recovered from the waters of Lake Chapala in Jalisco, Mexico.
Family members reported John Danilkiewicz, 64, and Zane Bennett missing on Monday when they failed to return from their trip.
Search teams found their bodies and that of an unidentified American. They are believed to have drowned.
Danilkiewicz was originally from Port Coquitlam where he owned a sheet metal business, but according to family members had lived in Mexico for some time.
In a post to his Facebook page, Danielkiewicz`s son, Mark said his father was a novice sailor.
"He and 2 friends went sailing, I don't think they knew anything about the sport. Well, next day they didn't make it home," he wrote.
However, the Mexico News Daily reported the three were believed to be "accustomed to sailing."
Robert Danilkiewicz of Maple Ridge, B.C. told CBC News his brother John and Zane Bennett were close friends who had known each other since they were 10 years old.
Mexican authorities say the three departed from the Playa Azul restaurant near San Juan Cosalá.
Chapala firefighters told the Mexico News Daily that strong, gusty winds which come up regularly in the afternoon, and the age of the boat may have contributed to the apparent accident.
The boat had a broken mast when it was found.
