Thieves make off with 6,800 kgs of steel tubing from Red Deer business

Two suspects face assault charges after an off-duty police officer and his fiancée were chased through a Spruce Grove park by a stranger brandishing a machete.

Officers were called to the scene at 6 p.m. on April 4, RCMP said in a news release Thursday.

The couple were jogging with their dog on the local trails when they passed two men sitting on a bench. One of the suspects starting arguing with the couple and challenged the man to a fight.

The man then pulled out a machete and made a death threat toward the off-duty officer and the dog.

Both suspects then started chasing the couple through the park. The victims were able to escape without being harmed, police said.

Two Spruce Grove men, aged 26 and 27, have been arrested in the case. They each face several charges, including possession of a weapon and assault with a weapon.

Both have been remanded into custody, pending separate appearances in provincial court.
