2 men injured in explosion at Moncton apartment complex

Two men were injured Thursday afternoon in an explosion in the basement of a large apartment complex in Moncton.

Moncton Fire Chief Paul Bruens said the two men were working inside the Lions Tower, near Vaughn Harvey and St. George streets.

"It came in as a large noise heard in a basement," Bruens said of the 911 call. "When we arrived on the scene there were two workers that were in the basement. One had received minor injuries and the other was more serious. Both workers were transported to Moncton City Hospital."

The fire chief, who said no one else was injured, refused to give details of the explosion or what kind of work the men were doing at the apartment building.

Bruens said the fire department is investigating and foul play has not yet been ruled out.

WorkSafe New Brunswick is also on the scene investigating.
