Two Toronto police officers were injured at the scene of an attempted bank robbery Friday evening, police say.

Insp. Andy Singh told CBC News that at around 7:15 p.m., emergency officials got a call about a bank robbery in the area of Lakeshore Boulevard West and Allen Avenue. It was reported that the bank was being held up by two men with knives.

"Once the officers got in, an altercation ensued, and as a result, that's where the arrest was made and the injuries were sustained," Singh said.

One officer was stabbed, while the other was cut, he said. Both officers are now in stable condition at a trauma centre, he said. No one else inside the bank was hurt.

Singh said the two accused are responsible for "multiple robberies in the Etobicoke area." Two knives were recovered at the scene, he said.

Police say there are no outstanding suspects or any threat to public safety.

"Once again we are reminded of the danger our members face day to day," Toronto Police Association president Jon Reid said on Twitter Friday night.
