2 Quebec bridges featured on Canada Post stamps

Two covered bridges in Quebec will be featured on a set of Canada Post stamps.

Most of Canada's 140 remaining covered bridges are in Quebec and New Brunswick, with just one each in Ontario and British Columbia.

Of the five being immortalized on postage stamps, the two in Quebec are:

  • Félix-Gabriel-Marchand Bridge: Known locally as the Marchand Bridge or Red Bridge, this 121-year-old span crosses the Coulonge River near the village of Fort-Coulonge in western Quebec. At 152 metres, it's Quebec's longest covered bridge.

  • Powerscourt Bridge: Built in 1861, this is one of Canada's oldest covered bridges. Also known as Percy Bridge, it crosses the Chateauguay River near the Canada-U.S. border, just southwest of Montreal.

The other three bridges featured on the stamps are the West Montrose (Kissing) Bridge just north of Kitchener, Ont., the Hartland Bridge in New Brunswick and the Ashnola No. 1 railroad bridge in B.C.

Canada Post says the covered bridges are being featured on stamps and postcards to recognize them as "important symbols of community life in rural Canada" while paying tribute to their engineering and design, as well as their role in transportation.

The stamps are available for purchase as of Monday.
