2 teens accused of manslaughter in killing of Tausif Chowdhury

Two young Ottawa men have been arrested in connection with the killing of Tausif Chowdhury, a 23-year-old international student who was found dead in the brush near the South Keys Transitway station in November.

Steven Kozielo and John Ruch, both 19, appeared in court on Saturday to face charges of manslaughter and robbery.

Chowdhury came to Ottawa in 2008 to study electrical engineering at Carleton University, his friends told CBC News.

He was from Bangladesh but his family lives in Saudi Arabia.

A cyclist discovered his body off a path between the Airport Parkway and the Transitway station around 7 a.m. on Nov. 27. Investigators recovered a hammer nearby.

Police say Chowdhury was known to them but he did not have a criminal record.

Chowdhury's former roommate Ayaz Mahmood said the arrests bring some peace but said it won't bring his friend back.

"This guy came all the way from Saudi to study. He thought this would be a better place to study," he said. "He is a friend and we'll always miss him."

Anyone with information about Chowdhury's death is asked to call the Ottawa police major crimes unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493.
