20,000 chickens inside Kansas barn when it explodes and collapses, fire official says

A barn near Newton with roughly 20,000 chicken inside collapsed after an explosion Thursday afternoon, according to the Newton Fire/EMS.

One person was in the barn when the explosion happened, but they weren’t injured, the department said on social media.

“Unfortunately, the barn was at or near capacity with 20,000 chickens,” the department said. “The entire structure has collapsed.”

The department did not say what it thought caused the explosion.

Firefighters were called at 3:25 p.m. to the 1400 block of N. West Road, which is just over a mile west of town. Fire crews are expected to be fighting the blaze through the evening.
