2015 Indspire Awards in Calgary hosted by Lorne Cardinal of Corner Gas

Sgt. Davis Quinton from the TV show Corner Gas — known in real life as Lorne Cardinal — is in Calgary to host the Indspire Awards on Friday.

The event recognizes the outstanding achievements of aboriginal Canadians in a wide range of disciplines.

"You know the way the press is, bad news sells. These people work in good news. They inspire other people and they inspire our future generations," Lorne Cardinal told the Calgary Eyeopener on Thursday.

Cardinal's career in TV, film and stage spans more than 25 years. He offered this advice to budding thespians.

"I learn off everybody I work with. It could be the greenest actor or it could be the most experienced actor, but there's always something to learn. So I just keep my ears open and watch and steal as much as I can," said Cardinal.

The two-time Gemini Award winner will co-host the event with actor Kyle Nobess at Calgary's Jubilee Auditorium.

Performers include 2014 Polaris Prize-winning Inuk throat-singer Tanya Tagaq and comedian Candy Palmater.

Four Albertans will also be recognized at the gala:

- Lifetime achievement: Elsie Yanik, Métis

- Arts: Ron E. Scott, Métis

- Law and Justice: Wilton Littlechild, Ermineskin Cree Nation

- Youth: Gabrielle Fayant, Métis
